Earth Day 2008

Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22, and Central Ohio is all decked out this week to celebrate. While you can check the Green Buckeye calendar for everything from film showings, galas, benefits, and cleanup events, Earth Day Central is really at Now Get Busy, where you can sign up to volunteer at many different environmental worksites across the region.

Plant trees in Dublin or Plain Township, clean up near Alum Creek or the Olentangy Bike Path, help out at the Kwanzaa Playground, or perform a litter audit in the University area. Whatever you choose to do, you'll be making the planet just a little better!

What's In a Name? KFCB Becomes COSA

Late last spring, Executive Director Neil Drobny announced that Keep Franklin County Beautiful was pursuing a new strategic direction and changing its name to the Central Ohio Sustainability Alliance (COSA).

As a result, COSA will expand and enhance its focus on sustainability, which is great news! You can help them out by volunteering, or perhaps by getting your business or school involved in the Waste Not Center.

USGBC Chapter Forming in Central Ohio

For those with a keen interest in LEED, Meera Parthasarathy of the Columbus Green Building Forum invites you to attend an organizational meeting to establish a chapter of the US Green Building Council in Central Ohio. Meera writes:

"This formation effort involves members from the Ohio Department of Administrative Services, Ohio School Facilities Commission, central Ohio's educational systems, Ohio State University, C-Tec (Licking County vocational school), City of Columbus and the Columbus Green Building Forum.

The goal is to develop a robust chapter locally by having active members in the community, on the leadership team, who have a keen interest in promoting green building practices and adopting LEED into their projects.

Come hear about the progress to date, next steps and ways to become involved in this important effort for our region and communities! Please join us on September 4th at AIA Columbus from 4:30-6:00 pm (21 West Broad Street, Suite 200). "
Please RSVP to Meera by 11 am, September 4th.

More Earth Day Fun!

It's an embarrassment of riches! We learned this week about another Earth Day celebration - this one sponsored by the folks who run the non-profit Niches Retreat.

Not to worry, Maureen of Niches tells me that their group is working with the folks coordinating the A Year in a Day events on the morning cleanup activities.

The Earthtouch & Niches Retreat event provides an alternative in the afternoon. You can join in the festivities at Studio 35, which include bands and a late-afternoon showing of An Inconvenient Truth.

The featured bands are: The Mac, Knot Fibb'n, and Halfway Home. Tickets, $10 in advance and $15 at the door, are available from Studio 35 and Clintonville Community Market.

As always, I've posted what I know about this event on the Green Buckeye calendar.

Make Time for Earth Day!

There's still time to volunteer for Earth Day: A Year in a Day activities on Saturday morning, April 21.

The afternoon schedule is shaping up nicely, too. You can now find a list of the bands who'll be playing at Goodale Park on the Earth Day web site.
